009: Creators! Get Things Done With Project Management Light

SelfPubEmpire Podcast

Season 1 Episode 009

Reading Aristotle is a veritable treasure trove of practical wisdom. He wrote “First, have a definite, clear practical ideal; a goal, an objective. Second, have the necessary means to achieve your ends; wisdom, money, materials, and methods. Third, adjust all your means to that end.”

Today let’s talk about project management. That might seem like a boring topic for a creator, but driving towards your creation takes managing your list of tasks and, if you are trying to go from Posts to Profit, then you need a plan to get to your goal. My goal for this episode is to give you exactly what you need to manage your project work without all the deep and complicated official methodologies. It’s a PM Light approach.

  1. Project Management Book of Knowledge From PMI.org. I project managed projects up to 7 figures in cost and years of work and implementation in the IT space.

  2. The PMBOK covers all the major approaches now, including traditional (waterfall) and agile. Most big organizations are moving towards agile.  For online creators working on creating moving from Posts to Profits, traditional methods tend to work well.

  3. For the creation process itself, one could lean towards an agile model rather than traditional methods.

  4. The Agile model. Agile has quite a few names associated with it, such as Scrum. Scrum is a subset of Agile and it’s a way of conducting an Agile project.

  5. The traditional model is great for step-by-step projects and work. It has a long history in organizational psychology, construction, and human history in general.

  6. Here they are and I’ll dive into each one:

  7. Crystal clear goals.

  8. Break things down into small, achievable tasks.

  9. Gantt chart from the WBS.

  10. Calculate the Critical Path

  11. Determine What you can assign Out.

Remember the old adage, "fail to plan and you plan to fail.".
